I've thought a lot about why Prop 8 passed. It wasn't until today that I realized that a lack of true leadership was the ultimate cause. If Harvey Milk was still alive today, he would have been this leader. While he was San Francisco City Supervisor, Milk urged gay people to out themselves to create an atmosphere in which nobody could easily support anti-gay legislation because it turns out that they themselves knew somebody who would be affected. This was not the case with Prop 8, of course. Nobody rose up to take Milk's place as leader of the opposition. Therefore Prop 8 passed. Did people learn their lesson here? Will a leader rise up in the face of the next Prop 8?
Hey, if all else fails, you can count on your humble cartoonist. I promise I'll be ready.
