Integration

Yes, I just made a math joke. I may have just died a little on the inside.

COLLEGE CHRONICLES IS EXPERIENCING SOME TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES AND WILL BE BACK NEXT WEEK.

The Answer is D

I went to the movies again today and I saw Slumdog Millionaire. I can safely say that it is one of the best films I've ever seen. Go see it if you haven't yet done so. One of the most uplifting films of the year also features an awesome soundtrack, which is always a plus in my book.

I went into this film still wondering why such slop as Twilight was even accepted into modern cinema, but I came out realizing that disgusting films like that are necessary in order to distinguish the true winners, such as Slumdog. As I've stated before, go see it now.

GO. NOW.

Airbag

Of course, I can't take all the credit. I worked alongside three other skilled and intelligent individuals in my quest to make the best airbag out of vinegar and baking soda.

Also, the prize was not being condemned to a future of poverty and unemployment in the auto industry, but rather receiving three bonus points for the class.

John

With all the business related to the start of a new semester and a new presidency, I completely overlooked introducing you to my new roommate. Ladies and gentlemen, I present you with John.

Wednesdays

Wednesday is now my least favorite day of the week. I was so out of it by Math discussion that I could barely stay focused (the fact that the discussion was about integrals certainly didn't help). Chem was awesome because we got to blow things up, but not awesome because I was reminded of how little Ms. Moore taught us in AP Chem. I didn't get a seat in my Classics lecture and I had to sit on the floor. The MCB seminar was better, since there were only six of us there. I was late to my Math lecture as well, but I managed to get a seat since other people were even more late. And Math discussion was, well, Math discussion.

Inauguration

Quick! Raise your hand if you think that today would be this emotional if McCain had won the election! Now take that hand and slap it across your face, because you're retarded.

But seriously folks, I attended the campus viewing of President Barack Obama's inauguration today in Sproul Plaza. Even though my view was obscured by a tree and three tall men, I managed to take in the full spectrum of emotions both on the viewing screen and all around me. Even if you don't like Obama, it is hard not to be impressed by the sheer force of what you have just witnessed. More so, perhaps, for those of us in Sproul Plaza this morning, as it literally got warmer and brighter when Obama appeared on the screen. I, for one, had a great time watching history unfold in front of me. Here's to four years of peace, progress and prosperity.

Welcome to the new age.

The Return

Last week I predicted that the Eagles and the Ravens would be this year's Super Bowl teams.

Now I predict that the Arizona Cardinals will win the Super Bowl. HA HA HA HA HA.

Broke

I added $500 to my Cal 1 card. Then I went shopping for books. Now I'm down to $50. And I still haven't gotten all of the required texts.

PoliSci 4

Even better, PoliSci is my only class on Tuesday, so I will basically have an extra day of break!

Of course, I need to start bright and early the following day with a 9:00 Chem lecture...

Hero

I've thought a lot about why Prop 8 passed. It wasn't until today that I realized that a lack of true leadership was the ultimate cause. If Harvey Milk was still alive today, he would have been this leader. While he was San Francisco City Supervisor, Milk urged gay people to out themselves to create an atmosphere in which nobody could easily support anti-gay legislation because it turns out that they themselves knew somebody who would be affected. This was not the case with Prop 8, of course. Nobody rose up to take Milk's place as leader of the opposition. Therefore Prop 8 passed. Did people learn their lesson here? Will a leader rise up in the face of the next Prop 8?

Hey, if all else fails, you can count on your humble cartoonist. I promise I'll be ready.

Groceries

This actually happened today. I forgot that I had to get bananas so I went home and checked the grocery list again. Then I went back to Safeway, picked up the bananas, and ended up being checked by the same cashier. Embarrassing experience. I suggest you always bring the list.

Student Drivers

On the subject of poor driving, I don't see why everybody thinks that Asians are bad drivers. Asian-Americans, such as myself, are just fine at driving. It's just the fobs that drive like maniacs.

Fail

Watched the Golden Globes last night. I think I'll try and see Slumdog Millionaire and Waltz with Bashir sometime soon. They should be pretty good.

Bipolar

A few observations by your armchair cartoonist:
 - Watching teams play this weekend, one would think that bye-weeks and home-fields are disadvantageous. Let's think about it, though. Could it be that the Titans, Panthers and Giants got rusty during their week off while the Steelers actually benefitted from extra recovery time for Roethlisberger's concussion? Perhaps. As for the whole home-field disadvantage, I can only hazard a guess as to performance anxiety being the cause.
 - Living in my area and only getting local games, one would forget or overlook the fact that Ben Roethlisberger is a good quarterback. Turns out he is.
 - It must be impossible to sit through commercial breaks if you are a recovering alcoholic.
 - Now for the important question: Who is going to the Super Bowl? I pick Baltimore and Philadelphia.

Eyes on the Prize

A few observations by your humble cartoonist:
 - Joe Flacco has become one of my favorite quarterbacks. He joins Aaron Rodgers, Shaun Hill, Matt Cassel, and Philip Rivers on that list. My least favorite quarterback is, of course, Ken Dorsey.
 - Caught the new commercial for the Watchmen movie. I'm glad that they fixed Rorschach's voice, since before he sounded like Batman.
 - It's just... does anybody else think that such a masterpiece will be forced to compromise in the transition to a different medium? That's the lone worry preventing me from counting down the days until the movie's release and rushing to see it for the midnight premiere.
 - Didn't bother watching all of the Cardinals - Panthers game. I mean, really. FIVE INTERCEPTIONS AND ONE LOST FUMBLE??? Delhomme literally handed victory to Arizona.

Neutral Party

Remember, of course, that Allan goes to UCSD. I don't think they've even heard of college football down there.

Why can't it ever be real???

BCS

Don't get me wrong, I hate the BCS system. I feel that college football could be improved by the introduction of a playoff system, the elimination of arbitrary rankings, or the replacement of the drunks who choose said rankings by wild chimpanzees. Once in a while, however, I actually agree with the teams chosen for the title game. This is one of those instances. So please join me in breaking out the cold ones, settling down in your favorite sofa, and watching the nation's two best teams duke it out like prizefighters.

On a similar note, I realize that, while I bombard you readers with loads of sports opinions, I have yet to mention my favorite (and least favorite) teams in professional sports. I'll take the liberty of doing so now.
NFL: favorite teams - Green Bay Packers; San Diego Chargers; Philadelphia Eagles
least favorite teams - Cleveland Browns; Minnesota Vikings; Miami Dolphins
NBA: favorite teams - New Orleans Hornets; Cleveland Cavaliers; Portland Trail Blazers
least favorite teams - Los Angeles Clippers; Orlando Magic; San Antonio Spurs
MLB: favorite teams - San Francisco Giants; Seattle Mariners; Chicago Cubs
least favorite teams - Los Angeles Dodgers; Washington Nationals; Texas Rangers
NHL: don't follow hockey
MLS: don't follow soccer

Dream School

This actually happened during college season last year... luckily it all worked out in the end.

Just like for Baltimore and Philadelphia! I was unfortunately unable to watch the Baltimore-Miami game so I didn't get a chance to see Chad getting his ass kicked, but I'm happy with the results nonetheless. Now that's what I call a wild-card weekend.

Dinner

"Wild Card" Saturday? Both wild card teams were eliminated! Not that I'm complaining though - I myself was rooting for Atlanta (eliminated) and San Diego (advancing).

Let's just hope that tomorrow yields different results. I'm rooting for Baltimore and Philadelphia, not just because I like those two teams, but also because I hate who they're playing.

Spare Change

Hmmm... the Utah Utes are about 5 minutes away from finishing this season 1) undefeated, and 2) ranked 6th in the BCS standings. Need any more proof that the BCS system is little more legitimate than a Zimbabwean election?

Nice Weather

This happens WAY too often. My New Years resolution is to grow a pair and ask even after she mentions the attractive stranger.

And then maybe ask the attractive stranger.
